BIOGRAPHY
Ms. Curtis has in excess of 30 years’ experience as a registered nurse, with extensive time as an ICU/SICU RN and later as an emergency room RN. Prior to becoming an ER nurse, she obtained her CCRN certification. Current certifications included TNS (Trauma Nurse Specialist), TNCC, ENPC, ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Provider). Her 20 years of critical care experience includes Neuro/Surgical/Medical ICU, including time as the Assistant Nurse Manager and for the last 10 she has worked the emergency department at Genesis Medical Center, Illini campus. She has served on the following hospital wide committees: Chairman of the Emergency Department/Cardio-Pulmonary committee, IT Liaison to the Illini Emergency Department during the development of Computerized Provider Order Entry, responsible for the education of staff and physicians for implementation and written various medical protocols and quality assurance committees.
Ms. Curtis has taught clinical nursing for Eastern Iowa Community College, Clinton Campus, and served in the Army as a medical laboratory technician with specialized experience in microbiology and blood banking.
Ms. Curtis began her education at Stillicom Community College and completed her Bachelors in Nursing at Marycrest College in 1984. She completed a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration in 2012 from St. Ambrose University. While completing her masters she was afforded an opportunity to conduct research in a variety of social issues and selected one of personal interest, human trafficking. This interest was created as the result of sermons at
St. Albans church on human trafficking, where she had become aware of a knowledge gap, which created a personal need for further research. What started as an individual quest for knowledge on human trafficking turned into two detailed projects over the span of two years.
Her final research project, a literature review of existing research, was presented in April 2012 to the academic faculty at St. Ambrose University. The presentation identified the scope of human trafficking and then focused upon young females in the sex industry. The culmination of the presentation specifically identified what the risk factors are for young females being trafficked into the sex industry. She is has developed a protocol, which is currently in review for publication, to teach medical personnel what indicators medical personnel need to be aware of when considering women as potential trafficking victims.
Ms. Curtis is a native of Illinois is married with two sons.
